Tata Electronics Plans ₹40,000 Cr Investment in Assam

GUWAHATI: An application has been submitted to set up a semiconductor processing plant in Assam with an investment of  ₹40,000 crore.

Tata Electronics Limited has applied to the Government of India to set up this electronic centre in Jagiroad, Assam.

While announcing Tata Electronics Limited’s interest in investing, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “For a long time, the question in our minds was, why don’t we have electronics and IT here?”

Tata Group have reportedly submitted a ₹40,000 crore proposal to the government of India, regarding the setting up of this plant, which will assemble and package semiconductors. For proceeding with this initiative, discussions were ongoing between the Assam government and the company and after its positive outcome they submitted a proposal to the Government of India.

CM Sarma also said, “We will have a major investment in Assam if their processes are completed with the Indian Government. We were doing it very quietly and we will see major investment in Assam in future. Although the Indian Government will decide finally for the first time, a program like Tata has applied for setting up a semi-conductor plant in Assam itself, which if it goes ahead will be a new environment for entrepreneurship in the state.”

Tata has also reportedly informed the state that they require the manpower of 1000 youth from Assam for training purposes of the upcoming industry.

As per the proposal, the semiconductor unit is likely to come up in Hindustan Paper Corporation’s Nagaon Paper Mill, which has been lying defunct for the last few years.
