GUWAHATI: Ustad Zakir Hussain, the legendary tabla maestro, breathed his last on December 15. Reports state that he passed away in a hospital in the USA after spending two weeks in the ICU due to heart and lung complications. He was 73.

"The world falls silent as the tabla loses its maestro. Ustad Zakir Hussain, a rhythmic genius who brought the soul of India to global stages, has left us. I was privileged to know him because of his connection with HMV and hear him perform at our home. His beats will echo eternally," tweeted industrialist Harsh Goenka.

Ustad Zakir Hussain was awarded the Padma Shri in 1988, the Padma Bhushan in 2002, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2023 by the Government of India. In 2009, he won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary World Music Album for his collaborative album Global Drum Project with Mickey Hart and Giovanni Hidalgo.
