Traditionally depicted with a blindfold and sword, the new statue features ‘Lady Justice’ with open eyes and holding the Constitution of India, thereby symbolising a significant break from its colonial past. This marks a bold statement by the judiciary, as it aims to prove that justice “sees everyone equally.”

Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud was responsible for leading the initiative. “The law is not blind; it sees everyone equally,” he said.

This new interpretation of justice reflects an evolving legal identity, shedding colonial symbols and embracing an Indian perspective. The new statue emphasises the judiciary’s focus on upholding rights, fairness, and constitutional principles, rather than mere retribution.

“The sword is a symbol of violence, but courts deliver justice according to constitutional laws,” added a senior official from the Chief Justice’s office.

This redesign aligns with the Indian legal system’s broader efforts to distance itself from its colonial heritage. For instance, the additional introduction of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) to replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC) is one of many steps aimed at reforming all outdated laws.

CJI Chandrachud has been vocal about the need to move away from British-era symbols and laws, emphasising that the judiciary's role is protective of constitutional rights, not punitive.
