GUWAHATI: The Supreme Court, under the leadership of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna, has implemented a significant change in the procedure for requesting urgent hearings.
On Tuesday, November 12, the CJI announced that oral mentions for urgent listings will no longer be accepted.
Advocates must submit requests for urgent hearings either via email or on written slips, clearly outlining the reasons for the urgency. CJI Khanna stated, "No written or oral mentionings anymore. Only in email or written slip. Just state the reasons of urgency."
This new directive marks a departure from the practice that was in place during the tenure of former CJI DY Chandrachud. Under his leadership, the Supreme Court allowed oral mentions, permitting advocates to make verbal requests for urgent listings, often in high-stakes cases such as demolition orders or imminent arrests.
