GUWAHATI: Indian football legend Sunil Chhetri has announced his return to international football, coming out of retirement to join the national squad for the FIFA international window in March. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) confirmed the news on Thursday, declaring Chhetri's comeback in an official statement on its 'X' handle, "Sunil Chhetri is back. The captain, leader, legend will return to the Indian national team for the FIFA International Window in March,"

The 40-year-old, who led the Indian national team for more than a decade, retired less than a year ago. His departure left a void in the squad, with FIFA itself paying tribute to his achievements.

Chhetri made his international debut in 2005 and finished his career with 94 international goals, placing him among the world's leading scorers. FIFA released a documentary in 2022 titled, “Captain Fantastic”.
His return has included him in the squad for the upcoming fixtures. India will be looking to make the most of Chhetri's experience and leadership as they prepare for the international challenge ahead.
According to the reports, India will play for the international friendly against Maldives on March 19 and the Group C opener of the Asian Cup qualifiers against Bangladesh on March 25. Shillong's Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium will host India’s two matches during the upcoming FIFA international window.
