Stampede In Uttar Pradesh's Hathras Claims Over 100 Lives

 

 

GUWAHATI: Over 100 people, including women and three children, lost their lives in a stampede during a religious event in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday. 
The stampede occurred at a 'satsang' (prayer meeting). Visuals on social media showed numerous bodies being transported by buses and tempos, with grieving relatives present.

UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has responded to the incident by setting up a committee to investigate. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu expressed their condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery for the injured. Modi stated that the Centre is providing all possible assistance to the Uttar Pradesh government.


A woman who attended the 'satsang' mentioned that it was organised in honour of a local guru, Bhole Baba aka Narayan Saakar Hari, and the stampede occurred as the crowd began to disperse. 


Adityanath, in a post on X, announced that officials have been instructed to conduct relief and rescue operations on a war footing and to ensure proper treatment for the injured. 
State ministers Laxmi Narayan Chaudhary and Sandeep Singh, along with the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, have been dispatched to the village.  Expressing his condolences to the families of the victims, the chief minister mentioned that a committee headed by the Additional Director General of Police, Agra, and the Aligarh Commissioner has been established to investigate the incident.

President Droupadi Murmu, in a post on X, described the incident as heart-rending. "The news of the death of many devotees, including women and children, in the accident in Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh is heart-rending. I express my deepest condolences to those who lost their family members and pray for the speedy recovery of those injured," she posted in Hindi.

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, also extended his condolences and urged workers from the INDIA alliance to assist with rescue and relief efforts.
