Reports suggest that the chaos ensued when a large crowd of passengers attempted to board trains bound for the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, resulting in the deadly incident.
On Sunday, Delhi Police launched an investigation into the incident, stating that CCTV footage would be reviewed to understand the sequence of events leading up to the stampede. The Ministry of Railways, in an official statement, announced a high-level inquiry into the "unfortunate tragedy."
According to the deputy commissioner of police (railway), platform number 14 was already congested when the Prayagraj Express was stationed for departure. Additionally, delays in the Swatantra Senani Express and Bhubaneshwar Rajdhani Express led to an increased presence of passengers on platforms 12, 13, and 14. The stampede erupted around 9:55 PM on Saturday.
One of the survivors, who lost his mother in the incident, recounted the harrowing experience. "We were travelling to our home in Chhapra, Bihar, as a group, but my mother lost her life in the chaos. People were pushing and shoving," he said. He added that doctors had confirmed her passing. Meanwhile, another grieving family member of a deceased woman collapsed in distress.
