GUWAHATI: A devastating stampede broke out at the Sangam during the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, on the morning of Wednesday, January 29, leaving at least 14 people dead and several more injured. The incident occurred as a massive crowd of pilgrims gathered for the 'Amrit Snan' on Mauni Amavasya, the most important ritual of the festival.

The chaos erupted when a surge of devotees caused barricades to collapse about a kilometer from the Sangam, triggering panic and resulting in suffocation and fainting among many. Many families were separated in the chaos, and the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals.

In response to the tragedy, the Amrit Snan on Mauni Amavasya, expected to draw around 10 crore pilgrims, was canceled. Ravindra Puri, President of the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad, announced that the Akharas would not participate in the Snan on the day following the incident, urging devotees to attend the Snan on Vasant Panchami (February 2) instead.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath about the incident, calling for immediate support measures.

With nearly 5 crore pilgrims already in Prayagraj and the number expected to reach 10 crore, authorities have implemented extensive security measures, including AI-powered surveillance, drone monitoring, and a significant police presence. Over 1,000 medical professionals, including 300 specialist doctors, are on standby to handle emergencies.

Despite the tragedy, the Maha Kumbh continues to attract millions, with over 15 crore pilgrims already participating. The festival, which began on January 13, is scheduled to run until February 26.

Rescue operations are underway.
