Specially-Able Boy from UP Reunites with Mother After 5 Years in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: A specially-abled 13-year-old boy from Uttar Pradesh reunited with his mother in Guwahati after five years.


Five years ago, the child was found by the railway police in Bongaigaon and was taken to the child welfare committee. Later, they handed him over to an NGO 'Destination' in Guwahati. As per officials, the child hails from Prayagraj. 


"The kid is autistic and doesn't speak much. He can just tell his name or school. From his language we figured out he is from UP," said Rupa Hazarika, Founder President Destination NGO and member of Assam Childs Commission told G Plus. It has been presumed, the child was playing and got lost near the station after which he boarded the train to Assam.


Upon inquest, it was revealed that his named was Som Soni and he studied in Barhaipol Public School. Som is under psychiatric and anti-epileptic medication from a long time. As such, Hazarika wrote a letter to UP State Commission for Protection of Child Rights. 


Various attempts were made to contact the parents, which didn't materialise to any success. In recent times, the usage of facial recognition helped gain data. Finally, the parents were contacted on February after the efforts the child commission. 


However, the happy ending was not immediate as due to the lockdown the parents were unable to come to Guwahati to meet their child. The mother and son were reunited after eight months.


In a heartening episode of pure maternal love, the mother was seen crying after she met her child.  The boy recognised his mother and acknowledged her as "mummy".
