Social media rages over a Facebook post by former Supreme Court Judge Markandey Katju regarding the Hathras gang-rape incident.

Condemning the incident, the jurist stated sex to be a 'natural urge in men' and claimed unemployment as the lead cause of rising cases of rape in the country.

The post read, "Sex is a natural urge in men. It is sometimes said that after food, the next requirement is sex. In a conservative society like India, one can ordinarily have sex only through marriage. But when there is massive and rising unemployment, a large number of young men cannot marry (as no girl will ordinarily marry an unemployed man). Consequently, a large number of young men remain deprived of sex…Therefore will there not be an increase in rapes?”

Although the former judge of the apex court of India did mention that "I am not justifying rapes, rather I condemn it", his post has sparked outrage and many have condemned Markandey Katju for his patriarchal stand.

The Hathras incident also sparked nationwide outrage after cops cremated the body of the 19-year-old victim without allowing family members to perform the last rites.
