Customer Alleges Sexual Harassment at Manyavar store in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: In a case of alleged sexual harassment against a tailor of Manyavar Mohey- a national chain of ethnic apparel stores-- a city resident has written to the National Commission for Women (NCW) to take action.

The complainant informed G Plus that he and his fiancee visited the Manyavar showroom located at GS Road on Sunday evening to get a lehenga stitched.

However, events took an unpleasant turn for the couple when the complainant’s fiancee was made to stand in the showroom and a male tailor touched her inappropriately on the pretext of taking her measurements, claimed the complainant, Shiharan Choudhury.

“We have highlighted this issue for the preservation and restoration of the rights of women. If the issue is not brought to the notice of concerned officials, this could happen to other people in the future too and I wouldn’t want such an incident to happen to any other woman in society,” Choudhury told G Plus.

He added that after his complaint, Human Resource officials from Manyawar office in Kolkata got in touch with him and said that they have constituted an internal team to enquire into the matter.

“If we do not receive any satisfactory response from the authorities at Manyavar, we are planning to take legal recourse and will sue them,” Choudhury further added.

On the other hand, officials at the Manyavar store in Guwahati said that they are looking into the matter.

“We are going through the footages of the CCTV cameras in the store and if the tailor is found to be guilty, we will definitely take appropriate action,” said store manager Amitabh Hazarika.
