GUWAHATI: Rajkumar Brahma, a senior leader and former BJP President for Kokrajhar district, has dealt a blow to the ruling BJP by formally joining the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) led by Hagrama Mohilary.
Expressing his dissatisfaction with the BJP leadership, Brahma not only resigned from his position as the BJP President for Kokrajhar but also relinquished his primary membership in the party. The departure of the seasoned leader has prompted the BJP to appoint Kabita Basumatary as the new district president in Kokrajhar.
Brahma had previously contested as the BJP candidate from the Baokhungri constituency in the 2015 Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections.
In an official ceremony attended by Mohilary and other BPF leaders, Brahma joined the party on Tuesday along with four other BJP leaders, namely Biplab Debnath, Bijoy Kumar Saha, Naboranjan Barman, and Chandan Tarpada, as per reports.
Addressing the media, Brahma attributed his decision to the lack of integrity within the BJP's organisation in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR). He claimed to have been sidelined, expressing disappointment with the party's leadership, as per reports.
Responding to the development, BPF chief Mohilary indicated that more leaders from the BJP and the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) might join the BPF in the future, media reports stated. Mohilary expressed confidence in the BPF's prospects in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and emphasised the party's decision to contest independently without forming alliances with other political entities.
