Second Body Recovered From Coal Mine Incident In Umrangshu

GUWAHATI: The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) recovered the body of another victim from the coal mine incident site at Umrangshu 3Kilo in Dima Hasao district, Assam. The operation, carried out by the 1st Battalion NDRF, took place early on January 11 morning.

The victim, identified as Ligen Magar, aged approximately 27, was found at the bottom of the mine at 7:35 AM. His body was handed over to the local police for further formalities. Magar was a resident of 1No Kalamati, Umrangshu, Dima Hasao, Assam.

The first body was recovered on January 8 from the ill-fated mine in which 9 miners have been feared trapped after it was flooded on January 6. The deceased was identified as Ganga Bahadur Srestho from Udayapur district, Nepal. The recovery was made by 21 Para divers as part of ongoing rescue operations at the mine in Umrangshu, Dima Hasao district.

The accident occurred when a sudden and unexpected flooding trapped the miners, who were unable to escape in time. Since then, a large-scale rescue operation has been underway, involving the Indian Army, Assam Rifles, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), SDRF and Navy divers besides police. These teams have been working to locate and rescue the trapped miners from the hazardous, waterlogged mine.
