SC refuses urgent hearing on plea seeking increased security for doctors

GUWAHATI: The Supreme Court on June 18, refused an urgent hearing on a plea that seeks safety and security of doctors in government hospitals across the country.

As per a report by The Indian Express, the apex court stated that there was no urgency to hear the matter as the doctors had called off their strike in West Bengal and other states.

Their plea will be taken up after the court’s annual summer break, the court added.

A vacation bench of Justices Deepak Gupta and Surya Kant said that it cannot pass an order without looking into all aspects of the case.

PTI quoted them saying, “ We can’t protect doctors at the cost of other citizens. We have to look at the larger picture. We are not against the protection given to doctors.”

The plea was filed last Friday, June 14 after several doctors protested in West Bengal against the alleged assault on their colleagues by the family of a patient who had died.

In addition, the IMA has also filed an impediment application seeking the court’s intervention, stating protection has to be given to doctors across the country.

It should be noted that doctors in West Bengal called off their week-long strike last night, June 17, after a meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who assured them that steps would be taken to up the security in government hospitals.
