SC issues notice to Centre on 10% EWS quota

GUWAHATI: The Apex Court sought the government's response on a plea challenging the 10 per cent economic reservation, saying it violates the basic features of the Constitution and contradicts several judgments of the apex court protecting the fundamental rights.

The Supreme court’s bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Sanjiv Khanna, has issued a notice to the Centre seeking its response, within four weeks."We will examine the issue," said CJI Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Sanjiv Khanna.

The petition filed by Youth for Equality, represented by advocate Senthil Jagadeesan and settled by advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan.

The plea argued that the Constitutional Amendment Bill is “vulnerable” and negates a binding judgment of the top court.

According to the critria for the 10% quota the high creamy layer limit of Rs. 8 lakh per annum ensures that the elite capture the reservation benefits.
