GUWAHATI: The Sahitya Akademi has unveiled the winners of the prestigious Translation Prize 2023, recognising outstanding translations across 24 Indian languages including Assamese and Bodo.
The prize, which includes a cash award of ₹50,000 and a copper plaque, will be presented to the translators at a special ceremony later this year.

"Mor Jivonto" translated by Lakkshajyoti Gogoi Handique, from the original work "Once Upon a Life: Burnt Curry and Bloody Rags" (Memoir) by Temsula Ao was recognised in Assamese while "Santanufwlerni Fisajla" translated by Ambikagiri Hajowary, from the original work "Santanukulanandan" (Novel) by Purabi Bormudoi was recognised in Bodo.
The Executive Board of the Sahitya Akademi, convened under the leadership of its President, Madhav Kaushik, approved the selection of 24 books for the Translation Prize 2023. The selection process involved recommendations from Selection Committees comprising three members each in the relevant languages. These committees adhered to the rules and procedures established by the Sahitya Akademi.

The selected translations encompass works originally published during the five years preceding the prize year, specifically between January 1, 2017, and December 31, 2021. Each recipient of the Translation Prize 2023 will receive ₹50,000 along with a copper plaque, symbolising their contribution to literary translation. The awards will be bestowed upon the translators during a special function scheduled for later this year.
