Rural Indians Spend More Money On Tobacco Than On Education: Survey

 

GUWAHATI; The Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) 2022-23 has revealed that Indians in rural areas spend more money on pan, tobacco and other intoxicating substances than on education. 

The survey revealed that Indians in urban areas incurred a Monthly Per Capita Expenditure (MPCE) of ₹6521, while Indians in rural areas incurred an MPCE of ₹3860, with expenses on pan, tobacco and other intoxicating substances ranging around 3.70%, expenses on entertainment at 6.07%, and expenses on education at only 3.23%.

The survey also revealed that Indians in rural areas and urban areas respectively spend 47.47% and 39.70% of their MPCEs on food, while beverages and processed food were the food items most purchased food items while their share in MPCEs also rose from 4.19% in 1990 to 9.41% in 2023. 

Furthermore, rural and urban Indians spent around 52.53% and 60.30% of their MPCEs on non-food items respectively, including fuel and light, toilet articles and other household consumables, medical, consumer services, entertainment, durable good, rent and taxes.

The Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) was conducted by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation from August 2022 to July 2023, with an aim to generate estimates of household MPCE and its distribution separately for the rural and urban sectors of the country, based on the data collected from 2,61,746 Households (1,55,014 in rural areas and 1,06,732 in urban areas) in the central sample spread overall States and Union Territories in the country.
