₹167 Crore Flood Mitigation Projects Approved For Guwahati

GUWAHATI: To tackle the recurring flood issues in Guwahati, the State Executive Meeting (SEM) on Wednesday approved key structural measures proposed by the Housing and Urban Affairs Department and the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA). The meeting was chaired by Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota.

The flood mitigation projects, worth ₹167 crore, include the construction of stormwater drains from Boragaon to Deepor Beel and from Khanapara to Basistha Chariali along NH 27. Additionally, a stormwater drain with grit chambers from Juripar to Silsako has been approved.

Other vital measures include the construction of a connector drain from Sarumotoria to Silsako Beel, with a pumping station, and a flood protection wall along the Bahini river channel from Rukminigaon to Janata Bhawan in Dispur.

The approved projects also focus on watershed management, silt traps, and hill erosion prevention through source control measures like underground retention tanks and rainwater harvesting systems.
