Ropeway project ready by July-end

The much awaited ropeway project connecting both the banks of Brahmaputra in the city is likely to be completed by July.   The state government in its reply to Gauhati HC said it has already sanctioned the work order for the ropeway project and construction has been resumed, the work to which was approved in 2006 and construction has been stalled since 2011.   The state government’s response came after advocate Rajib Kalita had moved the HC through a PIL seeking the court’s intervention. Before this, the GDD and GMDA were to submit a status report of the ropeway project.   The ropeway faced its biggest hurdle when a flash flood in 2009 in the river tilted a pillar and repair was needed. The second major hurdle was when Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) refused to give any permission for any kind of construction work at the site. The obstacle was removed after the National Monuments Authority (NMA) recommended granting the permission for the project.   Subject to completion of the foundation which again depends on the working season according to the river, the project has been ambitiously slated to be completed by July 2017.   Stay updated on the go with GPlus News.
