Roof Collapses At Delhi Airport Terminal 1 Due To Heavy Rain; 1 Killed, Several Injured

 

GUWAHATI: The upper part of the roof at Terminal 1 of Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport collapsed unexpectedly, killing one individual and injuring multiple others, on Friday, June 28, morning.

Delhi Airport took to Twitter to confirm that due to heavy rainfall, a section of the roof fell in the Terminal 1 of the airport.  Initial reports confirm that multiple individuals have been injured in the incident, along with the death of a person. One person, who was trapped inside a car, has been rescued and is now receiving medical attention. Several of the injured have been admitted to Medanta Hospital, as per reports. All departures from the Terminal 1 have been temporarily suspended and check-in counters have been closed.

Airport authorities and officials also stated that rescue operations are ongoing, with efforts focused on evacuating trapped individuals and removing damaged vehicles. The situation is being monitored, and further actions are being taken to ensure safety and manage the aftermath of the collapse.

Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu arrived at the airport to take stock of the situation and also addressed the media regarding this.

Delhi Airport has also extended support to the families of the individuals announcing a compensation of ₹20 Lakh to the family of the deceased, and ₹3 Lakh each to those injured

Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport was also similarly affected by a heavy downpour on March 31, which led to water gushing inside through a section of the roof. Several flights were also affected because of the rain. Damage due to water was seen throughout the airport.
