‘Ring of Fire’ Solar Eclipse to Dazzle The Skies on October 2, India To Miss Spectacle

GUWAHATI: The annular solar eclipse, or the 'Ring of Fire' will occur on Wednesday, October 2. The phenomenon happens when the moon appears smaller than the sun; thus, it will create a glowing ring of sunlight around its shadowed center.

This great eclipse would last more than six hours, starting from 9:13 PM IST and lasting up to 3:17 AM IST, which would deprive Indian viewers of the spectacle; consequently, they will also miss the traditional rituals known as Sutak Kaal.

The solar eclipse can be seen over parts of the Pacific Ocean, southern Chile, and southern Argentina. Here, observers will witness an event that no one sees twice in their lifetime-the moon partially obscures the sun, turning it into a spectacular crescent before the phenomenon builds into the renowned 'Ring of Fire.".

NASA says that this occurs when the moon, at the greatest distance from earth, passes between the sun and our planet. Since the moon is too far away, it does not cover the sun completely and thus brings a bright glow with fire around the lunar shadow.

The eclipse will start in stages, beginning with a partial eclipse at 11:42 AM EDT over the South Pacific Ocean. The main event-the annular eclipse- will start at 12:50 PM EDT, concluding its path over the South Atlantic Ocean by 4:39 PM EDT. By 5:47 PM EDT, all the eclipse including partial phases will be over.
