During the previous hearing, Chief Justice Khanna acknowledged the shortage of time and mentioned that three applications had been filed, including one for additional documents and another seeking directions. The case was rescheduled for 2 PM on January 29.
The matter had been listed earlier, but it was brought up by Senior Advocate Karuna Nandy, representing the Association of Junior and Senior Doctors. She mentioned that the case, listed as item 42, was now being considered in the supplementary list of cases.
A Kolkata sessions court sentenced the prime accused, Sanjoy Roy, to life imprisonment for his role in the brutal crime on January 20. Roy had been convicted under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including those related to rape, causing fatal injury, and murder.
The Court also noted that the National Task Force, which was formed to suggest ways to improve the security of healthcare professionals, had submitted its report. The Court requested responses from the States and Union Territories on these recommendations and gave the Task Force 12 weeks to submit its final report.
The incident has led to concerns about the safety of medical staff, with the body of the doctor being discovered in the seminar room of RG Kar Hospital. Following the discovery, the Kolkata Police arrested a civic volunteer, and the investigation was later handed over to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court. The CBI filed charges against the accused in October 2024.
