Rescue Efforts Begin For Those Stranded In Chungthang Tunnels In Sikkim

GUWAHATI: A precarious situation unfolded beneath the remote town of Chungthang in North Sikkim, as approximately 12 to 14 individuals remain trapped in tunnels with their lives hanging in the balance.

Their ordeal has stretched over a daunting 48 hours, during which they have been devoid of food, water, or any escape route. With each passing moment, the urgency of their rescue intensifies.

Friday morning saw a tense and challenging operation kick-off as a team of 60 dedicated rescuers from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) embarked on a mission to reach the isolated town of Chungthang.

Their primary objective was to rescue the individuals feared to be trapped within the tunnels. However, the fate of these individuals remains uncertain, with no confirmed information regarding their condition or well-being.

The flash floods that wreaked havoc upon the region on Wednesday have left a trail of devastation in their wake. The aftermath includes severed power lines, demolished cell towers, obliterated bridges, and washed-out roads, effectively isolating Chungthang from the rest of Sikkim.

In response to the dire situation, the Sikkim government promptly alerted Central authorities, drawing attention to the urgent need for assistance in Chungthang. In response, an NDRF team was deployed to the tunnels where individuals were potentially trapped.
