According to a press statement issued by the court, "The three-member Committee consisting of Mr Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice of the High Court of Punjab and Haryana, Mr Justice G.S. Sandhawalia, Chief Justice of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh and Ms Justice Anu Sivaraman, Judge of the High Court of Karnataka, constituted for conducting an inquiry into the allegations against Mr Justice Yashwant Varma, a sitting Judge, has submitted its report dated 03.05.2025 to the Chief Justice of India on 04.05.2025,"
However, the contents of the report remain undisclosed.
The inquiry followed reports of a large sum of cash discovered during a fire rescue operation at Justice Varma’s official residence in Delhi. The incident occurred in March, when firefighting personnel entered a store-room in the out-house of the residence and found bundles of burning currency. Justice Varma was serving as a sitting judge of the Delhi High Court at the time. He was later transferred to the Allahabad High Court, his parent court, amid growing scrutiny.
On March 22, Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna ordered an in-house probe, based on a preliminary report from the Delhi High Court’s Chief Justice DK Upadhyay. That report recommended a deeper investigation, citing concerns over the nature of the discovery.
In his response to the Delhi High Court, Justice Varma denied any involvement, stating that the store-room was unlocked and accessible to staff. He noted that he was not in Delhi during the fire incident and claimed the entire episode was part of a conspiracy to frame him. No cash was formally seized.
The Supreme Court uploaded documents, photos, and videos related to the incident, including visuals showing bundles of charred cash found at the site.
