A retired professor of English at Cotton College, Sarma leaves behind a rich legacy of academic and literary contributions.
Born on January 22, 1929, in Amayapur, near Nalbari, Sarma was the second of six children in a family deeply committed to education and humanitarian work. His father, Joydev Sarma, was an esteemed educationist and freedom fighter, and Sarma's siblings also made significant contributions in fields such as teaching, law, and medicine.
Sarma excelled academically, securing honours in English from Cotton College and earning multiple accolades, including the prestigious Regina Guha Gold Medal during his studies at Calcutta University.
Known for his intellectual contributions, he authored ten notable books, with ‘Assamese Literature of the 20th Century’ being among his prominent works. His editorial leadership at Ramanjali and his involvement in key cultural organizations underscored his lifelong commitment to literature and Assamese heritage.
Expressing grief over his demise, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to X (formerly Twitter) and wrote, "His immense wisdom touched countless lives, and his enduring legacy as a literary scholar will continue to inspire future generations."
Sarma's passing marks the end of a monumental chapter in Assam’s academic and literary history.
