Assam Artist And Lachit Borphukan’s Descendant Chandra Kamal Gogoi Passes Away

GUWAHATI: Chandra Kamal Gogoi, a renowned artist and a descendant of Assam's legendary Ahom hero Lachit Borphukan, passed away on Tuesday morning, August 13 at the age of 78.

He had been reportedly battling age-related illnesses and was receiving treatment at Lakhimpur Medical College Hospital.

Gogoi, a graduate of the prestigious Shanti Niketan in West Bengal, was celebrated for his talent in fine arts. His education and natural artistic ability earned him a prominent place in the art community. 

Gogoi later founded Kala Niketan, a fine arts school in Lakhimpur, and made significant contributions by designing postal stamps for the Department of Posts. Gogoi's legacy is also deeply connected to his royal lineage as a descendant of Lachit Borphukan, the revered Ahom general known for his heroic stand against the Mughals at the Battle of Saraighat.

In 2022, Gogoi was honored with the Bishnu Prasad Rabha Award for his lifelong dedication and contributions to the field of art, cementing his legacy as one of Assam's most respected cultural figures
