Reliance SMART Ordered To Pay Compensation For Overcharging Customer In Guwahati

GUWAHATI: The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Kamrup (Guwahati), has directed Reliance SMART to pay ₹13,500 in compensation to a customer for charging more than the Maximum Retail Price (MRP). The ruling came after a complaint was filed by Mehboobar Rahman, alleging unfair trade practices by the retail giant.

The incident occurred on September 21, 2022, when Rahman visited a Reliance SMART outlet and purchased various items, including 500 gram of Mantra Organic Sugar. The invoice showed that the sugar was charged at ₹80.75, while the MRP on the packaging was ₹75, indicating an overcharge of ₹5.75.

When Rahman raised the issue, Reliance SMART explained that the higher price was stored in their system instead of the correct MRP. The Consumer Commission ruled that this constituted an unfair trade practice aimed at making wrongful profits by overcharging customers and blamed the store's system.

The case was taken up by the National Lok Adalat, which ordered Reliance SMART, Reliance Retail Limited, Assam Tea Warehousing Corporation, and Reliance Industries Limited to compensate the complainant with ₹13,500 for the unfair trade practice.
