Rare White Hog Deer Spotted In Kaziranga National Park

GUWAHATI: A rare white hog deer was spotted in Kaziranga National Park in Assam on Monday, June 14. The incident has created quite a stir among wildlife conservationists and enthusiasts alike in the state.

Initially, locals spotted the deer and informed renowned nature photographer Jayanta Kumar Sarma. Sarma then managed to capture the rare deer on his camera in the Burapahar Range of Kaziranga based on the local’s information.

Sarma photographed the deer at a grassland near the 12 line area of Amguri Tea Estate, under the Kaliabor Sub-division in Nagaon district.

Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Kaziranga National Park (KNP) Ramesh Gogoi said that this particular white deer was seen for the first time in the park.

“The rare animal sometimes comes out of the park and wanders with other brown deer to feed on grass”, Gogoi informed.

"The white colour of the deer is a purely genetic matter, caused due to mutation of the gene, and it is not a different species of the deer family. Out of the total 40,000 hog deer in Kaziranga, one or two such kinds of uncommon white hog deer can be found" the DFO went on to add.
