Rare 'Fetus in Fetu' Case Detected In 32-Year-Old Pregnant Woman In Maharashtra

GUWAHATI: In Maharashtra’s Buldhana district, doctors have reportedly identified a rare medical condition known as ‘fetus in fetu’ in a 32-year-old pregnant woman. This extremely uncommon anomaly occurs when a malformed fetus is found inside another developing fetus.

The condition was reportedly discovered a few days ago when the woman, who is 35 weeks pregnant, visited Buldhana District Women’s Hospital for a routine check-up. During a sonography, doctors detected the abnormality.

Prasad Agarwal, an obstetrician and gynaecologist at the hospital, explained that ‘fetus in fetu’ is an exceptionally rare occurrence, seen in approximately one in 500,000 cases. He noted that only about 200 such cases have been reported worldwide, with around 10-15 identified in India, mostly after birth.

Describing his findings, Agarwal said he noticed an unusual structure within the fetus—bones and a fetus-like formation in the abdomen—which immediately raised concerns. To confirm the diagnosis, a second opinion was sought from radiologist Shruti Thorat, who verified the condition.

For a safe delivery and further medical care, the woman has been referred to a specialised facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, hospital authorities reported
