GUWAHATI: The ban-phi and bhoomi pujan of the Rang Ghar beautification project on February 1 in Sivasagar was performed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
“Constructed 280 years ago, Rang Ghar is not only Asia’s oldest surviving amphitheatre but lies at the heart of Assam’s Sanskriti and Sabhyata Today, I sought the blessings of our ancestors as we begin beautification works to preserve this living monument for another 1,000 years,” CM Sarma said on X.
The Rang Ghar at Sivasagar is the first amphitheatre of Asia that was built during the reign of Swargdeo Pramtta Singha in 1744 AD and is a prominent symbol of Assam's cultural heritage.
The beautification project plan of the 27-acre campus includes the construction of an encroachment-free perimeter, a 3,000-seater amphitheatre, along with other amenities, as announced by the Assam CM.
A boat house and a sound and light show will also be added, where local artisans and craftsmen will be invited to showcase their handicraft products, traditional dresses and local cuisines, reports stated.
Other personalities present at the Bhoomi pujan were Ranoj Pegu, the Education Minister of Assam, and Jogen Mohan, the Cabinet Minister of Revenue & Disaster Management, Hills Area Development.
