Puja committees asked to register themselves with police

GUWAHATI: With the Durga Puja just a few days away, city police officials have asked all the puja organising committees to register themselves with the police. 
  
Police officials informed the organisers that as per the rules, they are required to register their names with the police and obtain formal permission to set up a pandal and organise Durga Puja and urged them to submit their applications and provide NOCs timely.

Deputy commissioner of police (Guwahati West) Bhanwar Lal Meena on Monday said that out of the 175 puja committees which celebrate Durga Puja in Guwahati West district every year, only 71 puja celebration committees have obtained permission and have registered themselves till now. 


In the same vein, deputy commissioner of police (Guwahati Central) Ranjan Bhuyan informed that from Guwahati Central, while 169 puja committees had registered themselves last year, only 110 have obtained formal permission this year so far.

Regarding the immersion, the authorities mentioned that some of the designated places for idol immersion include Pandu port, Fancy Bazar Ghat, Jyotikuchi, Sunsali Ghat, Sonapur and Dharapur.

They also appealed to the puja committees to take out their respective processions for idol immersion by latest 11 AM on the day of visarjan in order to prevent any untoward incident.
     
Additionally, officials informed that a cricket match which will be organised in the city on October 21 – only a day after the end of Durga Puja. Therefore, keeping in mind the cricket match to be played between India and West Indies, authorities informed puja committees that they should dismantle all temporary gates constructed on the main roads, as they may create traffic problems.
   
Further, assistant deputy commissioner of police (Kamrup) Pulak Mahanta requested the organisers to inform the local police station well in advance in case they have invited any VIP for their puja celebrations or to visit the pandal. 

“We need to ensure proper arrangements for the VIPs and to adhere to security guidelines,” he said.

For the convenience of the visitors, district administration officials have asked all the office bearers of the puja organising committees to set up a ‘help desk’ for visitors which shall be manned 24X7 by the members or volunteers of the puja committees.
