Prisoner-Crafted Marketplace Inaugurated In Nalbari District Jail

 

GUWAHATI: A unique marketplace featuring products crafted by the prisoners of Nalbari District Jail was inaugurated by Jayanta Mallabaruah, the Minister of Public Health Engineering, Skill Development Employment and Entrepreneurship, and Tourism in Assam.

The initiative, undertaken in collaboration with National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and various Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), aims to provide a platform for prisoners to showcase their creations to the public.

The inauguration ceremony took place at Nalbari District Jail, with Minister Mallabaruah expressing his pleasure at being part of an initiative that focuses on skill development, rehabilitation, and creating opportunities for self-employment among inmates. The marketplace will serve as a display for a diverse range of products crafted by prisoners, allowing the public to appreciate and purchase these unique items.

Mallabaruah highlighted the collaborative efforts of NABARD and NGOs in supporting this venture, emphasising the significance of empowering prisoners through skill enhancement programmes. The initiative not only aims to exhibit prisoners' creations but also focuses on future plans to improve their skills further, resulting in the production of higher-quality products.

The Minister emphasised the importance of providing opportunities for prisoners to learn and develop skills that can contribute to their rehabilitation and reintegration into society. By creating avenues for self-employment, the initiative aims to offer a positive direction for individuals who are serving sentences.
