GUWAHATI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, January 27, engaged in a telephonic conversation with the U.S. President Donald Trump, reaffirming the commitment of both nations to work together for "global peace" and "security." The call took place one week after Trump’s inauguration for his second term, which was marked by a ceremony in Washington, D.C., where India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, represented the Government of India.

President Trump confirmed that PM Modi would visit the United States in February. The leaders focused on strengthening the US-India bilateral relationship, with diplomatic sources speculating that an early meeting between the two could be on the horizon.
Immigration was also addressed, with Trump stating that India would take the necessary actions regarding the return of illegal immigrants, aligning with his ongoing efforts to combat illegal immigration.
PM Modi’s previous visit to the U.S. was in September 2024, when he attended the Quad Leaders' summit hosted by President Joe Biden and addressed the UN General Assembly in New York.
In a tweet following the call, Prime Minister Modi expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "Delighted to speak with my dear friend President @realDonaldTrump @POTUS. Congratulated him on his historic second term. We are committed to a mutually beneficial and trusted partnership. We will work together for the welfare of our people and towards global peace, prosperity, and security."
The White House statement reflected this sentiment, emphasising that the two leaders discussed efforts to "expand and deepen cooperation" between the United States and India. The conversation was described as "productive," with both leaders agreeing on the importance of strengthening bilateral relations. They also reviewed plans for Prime Minister Modi’s upcoming visit and the Quad Leaders’ summit, which India will host later this year.
