GUWAHATI: Recently, in a lane near Hatigaon Jama Masjid area known as Parijat Path, three pillars sparked discussions about their origin and purpose. Addressing the situation, GPlus conducted a fact-check to unravel the truth behind these structures.

Talking to GPlus, Bijoy Baruah, a resident of Parijat Path and the General Secretary of the Parijat Path Union Committee, shed light on the matter. According to Baruah, these pillars had always been present until about a year ago when the lane underwent widening. To enhance the convenience of elderly individuals navigating the area, the residents decided to reopen this path, reinstalling the pillars on a Sunday.

Baruah added, "We reconstructed these pillars due to numerous accidents caused by rash driving by two-wheelers. Our primary concern was the safety of pedestrians, especially the elderly."

Another resident pointed out additional challenges related to antisocial activities in the Parijat Path. "Apart from accidents, this area also became a hotspot for drug addicts and individuals consuming alcohol. Despite multiple complaints, no action was taken. Now, with the lane completely reconstructed, we erected these pillars to discourage such incidents," the resident explained.

Exploring the background of the path's construction, it was revealed that the stretch from Hatigaon Post Office to the adjoining Ajanta Path was initially on private land. However, it was opened to the public for the convenience of the elderly. Over time, this path became a preferred route for commuters without helmets or licenses, attempting to evade the police.

Taking proactive measures, the residents, with the consent of approximately 30 families in the vicinity, collectively decided to reintroduce the pillars. Baruah clarified, "We sought approval from the residents, and this initiative is aimed at ensuring the safety and security of everyone in the community."

While the pillars may have raised eyebrows initially, they serve a dual purpose - averting accidents caused by reckless riders and curbing antisocial activities that have plagued the area.
