GUWAHATI: In response to a surge in road traffic accidents during picnic season, authorities in Assam have implemented a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to regulate and enhance safety measures for picnic parties. Typically organised between November and March, these gatherings draw large crowds to various scenic spots across the state.
The SOP outlines key guidelines aimed at preventing mishaps and ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants. Some of the major directives include:
• Strict measures are in place to prevent overcrowding in vehicles transporting picnic-goers.
• Trading of illicit liquor in and around picnic spots is strictly prohibited.
• Drivers of picnic vehicles are forbidden from consuming any intoxicants before taking the wheel.
• Loud music on vehicles is not allowed to maintain a peaceful atmosphere.
• Local police will conduct regular raids on dhabas to curb the sale of illicit liquors.
• Movement of picnic parties is restricted before sunrise and after sunset.
• The origin and destination of travel must be reported to the local police station.
• Surveillance groups, potentially involving Village Defense Parties (VDPs), will monitor illicit activities in and around picnic spots.
• Adequate lighting facilities will be provided in and around vulnerable picnic spots.
• Designated parking areas will be earmarked at every picnic spot to avoid congestion.
• Bus drivers responsible for transportation will receive proper briefings and must wear appropriate footwear.
• Picnic parties are urged to refrain from movement during foggy conditions.
