GUWAHATI: The Central Government has officially designated the Fact Check Unit, operated under the Press Information Bureau of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, as the fact-checking unit of the Central Government. This designation is made with respect to any business of the Central Government.

On March 20, 2024, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology issued a notification in this regard, S.O. 1491(E), exercising its powers conferred by sub-clause (v) of clause (b) of sub-rule (1) of rule 3 of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.

In accordance with the notification, the move aims to ensure the dissemination of accurate information to the public. The Fact Check Unit is entrusted with the responsibility of verifying the authenticity of information circulated across various digital media platforms.
