GUWAHATI: The recently inaugurated PA Sangma Stadium in Tura, Meghalaya, faced a significant setback on Thursday morning as a section of the facility collapsed under the relentless downpour and thunderstorms, causing widespread damage.

The incident occurred during a thunderstorm which was followed by heavy rainfall that swept through Garo Hills.

The stadium, which lacked a retaining wall in a specific section, proved vulnerable to the incessant rains, leading to a substantial landslide that dislodged a significant amount of soil from the field above.

The PA Sangma sports complex was inaugurated by Meghalaya's Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma earlier last year. The complex, including the newly built stadium, was expected to uplift football in Meghalaya, bringing renewed enthusiasm to football enthusiasts across the state.

With a substantial seating capacity of 9,500, the PA Sangma Stadium was constructed at a cost of ₹127.7 crore.
