The leaders, representing 10 political parties, criticised the Central government’s perceived negligence and expressed disappointment over being denied permission to hold a sit-in at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. “We have traveled over 3,000 km to demand peace and normalcy in Manipur, yet our right to protest has been denied,” said Kshetrimayum Shanta, convenor of the INDIA bloc in Manipur.
Addressing a press conference, Manipur Congress President Keisham Meghachandra Singh further highlighted the state’s struggles, including the displacement of over 60,000 people and hundreds of lives lost in the ongoing turmoil. “Manipur is also a part of India. Why has the Central Government ignored our plight for 18 months? We demand the Prime Minister’s direct intervention,” he stated.
The delegation had already submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister’s Office, urging Modi to visit Manipur before the year ends. In their letter, the INDIA bloc leaders underscored the devastating impact of violence since May 2023, which has displaced nearly a lakh and plunged the state into chaos.
The leaders have also vowed to continue their movement for justice through alternative forms of protest.
