GUWAHATI: Given the pandemic situation in the state and the added damages caused by the annual floods, the tea industry is witnessing a severe decline in production.
As per data provided by the Tea Association of India, tea production in Assam has decreased by 48.32 percent for the months from February to June, compared to the previous year.
In 2019, Assam produced a total of 220.04 million kgs of tea from February to June, the peak season of plucking. But due to the current crisis situation of the state, this number has reduced to an estimated 113.72 million kgs - a reduction of 106.32 million kgs.

In a press note released by the association, it has been mentioned that the crop outlook of the tea industry at this point of the season looks bleak in the aftermath of prolonged period of lockdown.
“The cumulnative effect of these phenomenon post Covid-19 has once again brought the tea industry staring at difficult times and in terms meeting its obligations in matters related to payment of wages/bonus, etc,” reported the press note.
