GUWAHATI: In response to a question from Sibsagar MLA Akhil Gogoi at the Assembly on Friday, Assam Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Jogen Mohan said that at least 5.8 lakh families in the state still don't have access to land.

"Over 1.35 lakh families have received land pattas from the current administration. While still adhering to all laws and regulations, the state government has been recovering encroached land. Families without land will receive these," the minister said as per reports.

The minister also told the House that there are 5,807,099 families in the state that don't have land and that the 2019 Land Policy will give them land over time.

He says that anti-encroachment drives are done in line with the Assam Land and Revenue Rules, 1886, to clear land that has been taken over.

But the minister denied claims that a certain community was singled out for extra attention during the operation to stop encroachment.

"Land pattas have been given to a total of 1,36,140 families by the state government in the last two years," the minister said.
