According to reports, the incident occurred at approximately 12:30 am, with injured attendees now receiving treatment in hospitals across Kasargod and neighbouring districts.

Kasargod MP Rajmohan Unnithan expressed deep concern about the incident, saying, "Shocking news came from Nileshwaram in Kasargod district last night. Around 154 people have been injured and admitted to various hospitals. This Theyyam festival is a custom for the people of North Malabar… the police were not cautious about this festival."

The explosion is believed to have started when sparks ignited a shed housing firecrackers, located less than 100 metres from the main fire-line.
