GUWAHATI: In the wake of a video of two women being paraded naked in Manipur, the key accused, identified as Heradas (32), was apprehended in Thoubal district on Thursday.
The distressing video, which went viral, sparked widespread condemnation across the nation and demands for immediate action were made on social media platforms.
Announcing the arrest through a tweet, Chief Minister N Biren Singh assured the public that his government would ensure stringent measures against all those involved, leaving open the possibility of capital punishment for the perpetrators.
The incident was reported to have occurred in Kangpokpi district in May, a day after the eruption of the Kuki-Meitei conflict in Manipur but it came to light months later.
The video shows Kuki women being forcibly stripped and subsequently paraded naked reportedly on May 4. The perpetrators reportedly threatened to kill the women if they refused to comply.
The incident has drawn strong criticism from prominent figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Supreme Court, who have expressed their utter condemnation.
After over 2.5 months since the incident, the video emerged on Wednesday. Authorities are actively investigating the case to nab all those responsible.
Amid the ongoing investigation, the Centre has requested that Twitter and other social media platforms remove the disturbing video to respect the privacy and dignity of the victims.
