NRC Coordinator Refutes News Published by Al Jazeera

The NRC Secretariat has issued a scathing statement against a news item published in Al Jazeera.

The report written by senior journalist Subir Bhaumik is captioned "Nearly five million in India's Assam at risk of citizenship loss."

The report, dated March 29, 2018, has quoted NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela as saying that some 4.8 million people in Assam have failed to provide appropriate legacy documents.

Rebutting the quote published in the report, Hajela on Friday took to Facebook to say that he never had any conversation related to NRC with Bhaumick, and that he never made any such statement.

Talking to G Plus, Hajela said, "I have never given such a quote to any journalist. I don't even know about the media organisation publishing such news."

Hajela has further alleged that the content published in the Al Jazeera report is completely false and not based on factual data or information.

Subir Bhaumik who hails from Tripura is a contributor to Al Jazeera.

He had been the East India correspondent of BBC between 1992-2010.  He assumed the role of Editor in Seven Sisters Post until May 2012 when the management decided to remove him from the post.  Currently, he also writes for Asia Times and had also been a contributing editor for bdnews24 of Bangladesh.
