Northeast To Get Two International Airports

GUWAHATI: Two airports of the Northeast will be upgraded to international airports- the Imphal Airport in Manipur and the Agartala Airport in Tripura. 

This was announced by the Minister of State for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jitendra Singh. Speaking at an event recently, the Minister said that the two international airports will be added to the Northeast in order to ensure better connectivity in the region.

G Plus spoke to Ravi Kant, Regional Executive Director (North Eastern Region) of Airports Authority of India, who said, “The notification for the up-gradation of the Agartala airport, also known as the Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport has been issued. Further decisions are yet to be taken.” 

"The Imphal Airport or the Tulihal Airport has also been labeled as an International airport recently. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it could not be officially opened as an international one until now”, Kant added.

The DoNER Minister also said that the Itanagar Airport in Arunachal Pradesh will be functional by the end of the year while another one is coming up at Kohima in Nagaland.
