The case was registered by the Principal Bench of the NGT in New Delhi under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, following media reports highlighting the issue.

As per the tribunal's official website, a date for the hearing has not yet been scheduled.

This development comes shortly after the Assam government signed an agreement with the Tata Group to construct a five-star hotel near the UNESCO World Heritage site. The Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Amalgamated Plantations Pvt Ltd (APPL) and Indian Hotels Company Ltd (IHCL), both subsidiaries of the Tata Group, to develop the luxury property at an estimated cost of ₹120 crore.

As part of the MoU, a resort and spa will be established near Kaziranga. The facility, developed by APPL in collaboration with IHCL, will be located near the core area of the National Park.
