GUWAHATI: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) and RailTel Corporation of India Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Monday to install an Intrusion Detection System (IDS) to prevent train-elephant collisions.

The NFR took the initiative to install IDS in critical sections of the state to prevent and detect the movement of wild animals, particularly elephants, approaching the tracks.

The agreement was signed by G R Das, Chief Communication Engineer of NF Railway, and Zakir Siddiqui, Executive Director of RailTel's Eastern Region.

The system is based on artificial intelligence (AI), and existing optical fibres will be used as sensors to detect wild animal movements and alert control offices, station masters, gatemen, and loco pilots.

It employs a fibre optic-based acoustic system that operates on the principle of dialysis scattering to detect the presence of elephants on the track in real-time.
The AI-powered software can detect unusual movements over a distance of 60 kilometres.
