GUWAHATI: The Northeast Frontier Railway’s (NFR) Railway Protection Force (RPF) seized contraband goods worth over ₹8.12 crore during operations conducted from January 1 to 31.

In this sustained crackdown on smuggling activities in trains and railway stations, the force also apprehended 19 individuals for alleged involvement in transporting large quantities of contraband.
As for combating ticket touting, the RPF apprehended 15 touts during the same period and recovered 130 railway tickets valued at ₹3.02 lakh. These actions were undertaken to curb illegal ticket procurement and ensure lawful railway travel.
One notable incident has been referred to, when the RPF on January 23, the RPF, in collaboration with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) of Guwahati, conducted a search on Train No. 12068 DN (Jan Shatabdi Express) at Guwahati Railway Station. The operation led to the apprehension of a woman in possession of 360 grams of heroin valued at approximately ₹72 lakh. The arrested individual and the recovered drugs were handed over to the NCB for legal proceedings.
Earlier, on January 7, the RPF team of Siliguri, along with the Crime Intelligence Branch (CIB) unit of New Jalpaiguri, had also conducted a raid at Maa Shakti Travels, a shop in Darjeeling, West Bengal. The raid resulted in the seizure of 99 live e-tickets and 13 used e-tickets worth ₹55,779. One person was apprehended in this connection, and a case was registered under Section 143 of the Railways Act for further legal action.
