New Study Reveals Long-Term Effects Of Covaxin

GUWAHATI: A new study by Banaras Hindu University has found that almost one-third of people who received Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin vaccine experienced significant side effects. These effects, known as "adverse events of special interest" (AESI), were observed in a follow-up study conducted over one year.

The study included 926 participants, of which 635 were adolescents and 291 adults. It was carried out from January 2022 to August 2023 and participants were interviewed by phone about their health one year after getting the vaccine.

About half of the participants reported infections during the follow-up period, mostly viral upper respiratory tract infections. Serious AESI, such as stroke and Guillain-Barre syndrome, were reported in 1% of the participants.

The most common disorders observed in adolescents after vaccination were new skin and subcutaneous disorders, general disorders, and nervous system disorders.

This study, published in the journal Springer Nature, highlights the need for ongoing monitoring of vaccine effects. It comes shortly after AstraZeneca admitted its COVID-19 vaccine could cause rare side effects like blood clotting and a decrease in platelet count.
