GUWAHATI: In yet another example of infrastructure neglect, a cattle bridge near the Last Gate rotary in Dispur has become a hazard, drawing complaints from the public over its deteriorated state. A gap in the iron culvert, which serves as a makeshift bridge, recently caused a serious accident for a daily commuter.

Speaking to GPlus, Biswajit Das, a commuter who narrowly avoided severe injury, shared his experience. “I want to bring this issue to light for necessary action. At the roundabout near Last Gate in Dispur, there’s an iron culvert covering a manhole, but the centre of the culvert is open. My bike’s front wheel slipped into the gap, and I nearly had a serious accident. I have no idea where to report this, so I thought reaching out through the media would be the next best step. The administration must step in before someone else gets hurt.”

Locals have also voiced frustration, noting that the damaged cattle bridge remains ignored despite posing a clear danger to motorists and pedestrians alike. Many believe that regular maintenance could prevent such hazards, yet incidents like these persist.

A Public Works Department (PWD) official from the Dispur Division acknowledged the issue, stating, “The cattle bridge was reinstalled after the previous structure corroded. However, due to continuous traffic, we couldn’t allow enough time for the installation to set, which led to its rapid deterioration. We’re aiming to restore it shortly.”

The situation highlights a concerning pattern of infrastructure issues in Guwahati, where road safety often seems secondary to hastily managed repairs. Residents are now urging the authorities to expedite restoration work before another accident occurs.
