NDA Registers 325 Uncontested Wins In Assam’s Panchayat Polls Ahead Of Voting

GUWAHATI: The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has secured a total of 325 seats unopposed in the upcoming panchayat elections in Assam. The development was announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday, April 18, as the last date for withdrawal of nominations was observed a day earlier.

“We are confident that when the final election results are declared, this tally will grow even more impressive,” Sarma posted on X. “The NDA is all set to sweep the Panchayat elections in Assam.”

As per the data released, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won 35 Zila Parishad Constituencies (ZPC) and 259 Anchalik Panchayat Constituencies (APC) uncontested. The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), an NDA ally, has won 2 ZPC and 29 APC seats without contest. Combined, the NDA has secured 37 ZPC and 288 APC seats.

Other parties and independent candidates accounted for a limited number of uncontested wins. Independents won 13 APC seats, the Indian National Congress won 9, and the All India United Democratic Front secured 1.

Sarma described the development as an unprecedented mandate in the political history of Assam. He further expressed optimism regarding the final results of the panchayat elections, stating that the NDA is expected to expand its tally and is poised to perform strongly in the remaining phases of the election.

Relatedly, the Assam government earlier declared public holidays on May 2 and May 7, in view of the upcoming two-phase Panchayat elections.

Polling on May 2 will be held in districts such as Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Majuli, Jorhat, Golaghat, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Bishwanath, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Sribhumi. The second phase on May 7 will cover Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Bajali, Nalbari, Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro), Hojai, Nagaon, Morigaon, and Darrang.
